Why do we give Advent Calendars?

An Advent calendar is a way of counting down the days until Christmas, In religious terms Advent means ‘coming’ or ‘arrival’ in Latin, referring to the anticipation or the coming of Jesus. Advent calendars originated in the 19th century in Germany, and they have since become a popular tradition around the world. Today some cost 100’s of pounds and contain beautiful gifts.

Way back when I was young . . .

When I was young we had ones that opened to reveal a pretty picture no gifts back then! When my son was young he had a chocolate calendar with the ‘Tweenies’ on the front he got up early one morning and ate the lot he was 2! Later he was obsessed with Playmobil and Lego advent calendars. Of course it goes without saying that my favourite is a beauty calendar the bigger the better, in fact sometimes it takes the place of a gift!
