Winter Sewing Plans
Autumn/Winter is my favourite season for many reasons, but one of them is that I get to sew more. I love tucking myself away in my cosy sewing room making warm, simple clothes and accessories for myself and my family. I’ve picked a few of my favourite coats & jackets sewing patterns to inspire you . . .
Winter Coats And Jackets Sewing Inspiration
What to Consider, 3 style tips.
Choosing winter coats and jackets to sew can be tricky, as you want to balance warmth, comfort and fashion. Here are some tips to help you find the right coat for your needs:
- Consider the length of the coat. A longer coat will keep you warmer, but it might be harder to move around in, especially if you drive or walk a lot. A shorter coat will give you more mobility, but it might expose your legs to the cold. A mid-length coat can be a good compromise, as it covers your hips and thighs without restricting your movement too much.
- Think about the material and insulation of the coat. Wool, down and synthetic fill are some of the most common options for winter coats. Wool is natural, breathable and durable, but it can be heavy and expensive. Down is very warm and lightweight, but it can lose its loft when wet and it might trigger allergies. Synthetic fill is cheaper and easier to care for than down, but it can be bulky and less breathable.
- Choose a color and style that suits your personality and wardrobe. Winter coats are often in neutral colors like black, gray, navy or beige, as they can match with almost anything. However, you can also opt for a brighter or bolder color if you want to stand out or add some cheer to your outfit. The style of the coat can also reflect your taste and mood, whether you prefer a classic trench, a cozy parka, a sleek puffer or a trendy faux fur.

You can create winter or summer versions which can be lined or unlined (you will receive instructions for both options). You can also choose between welt pockets or patch pockets depending on your skill level and your intended style for the piece. This is the probably the most complex make in the range but will be well worth the effort.
