How an Ex Dining Room Evolved into a Snug

Snug aka Ex Dining Room Small Lounge or even a Library!

The Snug or whatever name finally settles on this room. During the previous 20 years it has evolved through many stages. For a couple of years it was a dining room, complete with mid century sideboard, a large dining table and six chairs (non matching of course!) Around that table we celebrated Christmas dinners, birthday teas and suppers with friends. However as our son grew our lifestyle changed. Less birthday parties, more outside barbies! We preferred to sit around the kitchen table, or outside UK weather permitting. The room was unused, it became a corridor, passed by on the way to the garden via the conservatory. In short an unloved space.

Snug Meaning

SNUG – a small place giving feelings of warmth, comfort, and protection:

cambridge Dictionary

The latest reincarnation of what is now know as the snug

The Evolution = 1 x Dado Rail demolished 2 x Wallpapered, 3 x painted

I am shocked at how many times this room has been redecorated aka ‘refreshed’ At least 5, possibly 6 times over 18 years!

The first Redecoration Circa 2005

The first is always memorable, soon after we moved in, we stripped out the dado rail, painted the room white and papered a wall with Cole and Sons ‘Woods’ do you remember that print, it later became a bestseller and it was everywhere! That was my cue to strip it and go with 100% white. Expensive then its still £140 per roll today.

Right from the beginning we invested in the best quality flooring we could afford. For the snug we choose Jute/seagrass natural carpeting. No regrets.

For 10 years everything was vintage and colourful against a white background. This way it was easy to switch up when our (my) interior tastes changed. We went less vintage more natural neutral and lots of plants.

At this point in its evolution it featured in Home style magazine.

At this Point we were heavily into Colour and Retro Mid Century Modern design

Our kitchen was even given a spot in Mini Moderns Book, proud moment.

Instantly becoming a family favourite, it was a sad moment when we stripped it last year, but we wanted something calmer.
