Sewing Dresses From Linen Tablecloths

Always on the lookout for money saving economies, the idea of sewing a wardrobe from tablecloths or old clothes is not original. Women have been doing it for centuries, think of all those beautiful patchwork quilts. Today however, it not only saves money but also helps to save the environment and maybe even the planet. I am all for it and have embraced it wholeheartedly . . .

The latest Dresses from Linen Tablecloths

Three and counting, a quick recap for you. In the Image below you can see:

  • The Vali Dress By pattern Fantastique (my favourite) I posted about this one last year
  • The best selling McCall’s pattern M7969 (I didn’t like the bodice, too high)
  • Latest of the dresses from linen tablecloths. Pattern loosely based on the Isabella top B by Hubbading patterns.

Why Make Dresses From Linen Tablecloths ?

Two words ‘money saving’. If you had to buy the same amount of this quality linen from a fabric shop, it would cost you so much more money. Linen tablecloths are 100% pure soft washed linen and are usually dyed in on trend colours. So for instance I bought a Linen Tablecloth from H&M Home, in the sale and it cost me £17 inc free postage. It measured 140cm wide x 320cm long. Full price cost – £49.99, compare this to the price of similar linen bought as fabric at £28 per meter. This would have cost over £84 plus postage! I rest my case.

Top Tips

  • Sign up to become a member of H & M to get free postage and extra offers.
  • Wait for the sales for the best bargains.
  • Undo the generous hems to gain more fabric, takes patience but so worth it!
