Memphis Style Crochet Blanket fit for a Teenager

A crochet project catch up post. Assorted scraps of yarn and my vast collection of crochet hooks have been my ‘sanity saviors’ during the past few weeks. Even the teen took a fancy to one of my recent projects and much to my suprise he claimed it for his own. This Memphis style crochet blanket, in various bright colours was also a big hit on instagram…

What is Memphis Style?

If you are a fan of Italian interiors you will probably be aware of Memphis style:

“The Memphis Group was a collaborative design group founded by Italian designer Ettore Sottsass, with its roots in furniture design – it made its influential debut at the Milan furniture fair in 1981. But it was relatively short-lived as an actual collective, closing down after just six years.”

Geometric, primary colours and laminated plastic furniture with a touch of Art Deco in the shapes. Not at all like my usual taste, with bright unnatural colours. You will see a lot of this style and colours on the buildings in Miami in the US.

Review of the Memphis Style blanket pattern:

This project took me two weeks to complete, working for a couple of hours each evening whilst watching TV! A joy to make up. The pattern is well written with helpful illustrations and video tips. Katie uses simple stitches suitable for a beginner who can read patterns with confidence. Give it a go! I am planning on making a cushion too, the teen wants to take them both to University!

The finished project enjoying its moment in the sunshine!

The chunky Neutral version

I have just ordered some yarn to make a neutral version of this glorious blanket. Image below Watch this space. There are oh so many projects and ideas around here!
