The spectre of eczema is something that haunts many people. Some live with the symptoms for most of their lives. For others and I count myself and my family in this group, it begins during toddlerhood and continues intermittently throughout childhood and on into midlife. For years we have used Balneum…

We Have A Family History With Balneum
Balneum is my trusted old friend when it comes to itchy dry skin! As a family we have used it for years and years. When my son was about 18 months old, he developed eczema behind his knees and under his chin. Of course, we immediately consulted our Doctor, who prescribed a mild hydrocortisone cream, but as it was a mild case and didn’t appear to bother him, I preferred not to introduce a steroid cream. We controlled it with emollient creams and bath oils. My first introduction to Balneum.
Balneum Oleo wash.
Today I would use the latest version of the Balneum skin wash the Oleo Wash because it:
- Combines hydrating and cleansing properties for the gentle soothing of dry and itchy skin
- Enriched with soy and avocado oils, Oleo Wash is formulated to protect and replenish your skin
- It acts like a local anaesthetic, reducing and relieving the uncomfortable sensations that drive you to scratch your skin.
The Exam Stressed Teenager:
Today we are all aware of the damage stress does to our bodies and our immune systems. Stress can also contribute to many skin problems from Acne to Eczema. So, although like most children my son grew out of his childhood eczema, it will still flare up during times of stress.
Balneum Dry Skin & Itch Relief Cream.
As the mother of a teen who has just survived his GCSE’S and is now studying for his ‘A’ levels I can tell you I am an ardent fan of the Balneum itch relief cream. The boy loves his showers, so I encourage the use of the oleo wash and advise him to follow up with the itch relief cream on any eczema prone areas. Of course, I can’t make him use it, but I know he does because he stops complaining about itching!
During the Menopause
So, let us jump right in and talk about one of the many annoying and uncomfortable symptoms of the menopause. Dry skin, and not just in the usual areas like elbows and knees, I’m talking dry skin all over! Legs, arms and even shoulders, or ‘soldiers’ as my son used to call them!

This summer, my legs from my ankles to my thighs have been drier than ever before. Plus of course with dry skin comes flaking and itching followed by scratching, AKA. the vicious cycle of dry skin. Normal body lotion, especially my fragranced lotion makes my skin feel worse. So as usual I turn to good old Balneum. I shower with the oleo wash; I take my makeup off with the lotion and use the hot cloth method to remove it. I switch from using my usual fragranced body lotion and slap on a few handfuls of the Balneum cream. It feels so good. My legs stop flaking and start to feel human again.
Autumn and winter bring on another cycle of dry and itchy skin problems. Central heating and extremes of temperature are the main culprits. We regularly go in and out from heated rooms and cars into the frosty morning air. This is the time of year when I plan ahead by stocking up on the cream, making sure my handbag and car glove compartment contain small pots of decanted cream or even better sample size tubes for emergencies.
Balneum Anti Dandruff Shampoo
I mustn’t forget to tell you that Balneum also make an anti dandruff shampoo, good to know and keep handy in the cupboard if you or a member of your family ever do suffer from an itchy flaking scalp.
My Favourite Balneum product?
The itch relief cream gets my vote every time; non-fragranced, not too greasy, soothing, softening and of course hydrating. It is proven to relieve itching within 5 minutes. I have not personally timed it to the minute, but I do agree it works very quickly!
