How to wear a Vintage Blouse & make it Look On Trend for Autumn

Do you ever see someone wearing a gorgeous outfit and think to yourself that is exactly what I have been looking for I wonder where she got it? Enquiries are made and it turns out that the beautiful top you wanted is a vintage blouse that was bought at a boot fair for 50p! Frustrating or what?

Marks & Spencer Vintage Blouse circa 1966

This is the second in my new monthly vintage clothes I wear series.

Vintage is one of my obsessions I am a huge fan of restoring and wearing old clothes. However, if you wear vintage from head to toe, I think you are in danger of looking like a character from a play, the word ‘costume’ springs to mind. Last month I shared my 1970’s pink floral dress

The clever thing is to wear them and make them look modern. It is also nice to know that what you are wearing is unique and cannot be bought on the high street.

This Blouse is a very old Marks and Spencer Trycel Blouse. I believe the date on the label indicates it is from 1966! The quality is superb, the collar is fully interlined and the seams are finished off beautifully. As a seamstress I can appreciate the work that went into this vintage blouse. They just dont make them like this today. Those mass produced garments will not be around in 45 years time, will they? Can you imagine wearing a 45 year old primark top? Enough said!

I have been collecting vintage clothes from the age of 18. Some I wear, some are too old and too delicate to wear, these I store safely and admire them from afar. Others form part of a themed collection, such as my Laura Ashley 1970’s prairie style dresses.

Where to Buy Vintage Clothes.

Sometimes I find bargains in my local charity shops, living in a rural area helps, the prices are lower and sometimes the labels go unrecognised! I have turned up some amazing vintage treasures from my local Age Uk shop. The best bargains are to be found at the boot fairs during the summer. I found this vintage blouse at a boot fair.

You have to be prepared to rifle through boxes. I always look for the prints, go with your gut, pull out what you really like then check the labels. Of course you can buy online from ebay but the prices are high and you need to be sure to know your stuff, so as not to inadvertently buy a fake or something new that looks vintage.

How to wear Vintage.

Mix it with your modern clothes! For example, wear one piece of vintage with two pieces of modern items. In these these photos I am wearing my vintage blouse with modern jeans and shoes. How easy is that? The scarf print is bang on trend and looks very modern with my own jeans. These pics were taken in Plymouth, isn’t it a pretty harbour?
