He made me a beautiful bedside shelf
Bedside tables are my nemesis. I go to sleep beside a neatly ordered space and wake up beside a bomb site! Books all over the place, spilt water drops and hand cream ‘splurging’ from its tube. How does this happen? Perhaps I am a magnet for clutter? The bigger the space the more amazed I am at my talent to fill it with clutter. Happy to report that a new handmade bedside shelf has come to my rescue.
The Before
There is no before!
I am ashamed to state that due to my inability to keep my bedside table tidy and in an effort to be organised, I banished my old cupboard to the garage and reduced myself to this little basket on the floor. The last straw came when the puppy emptied it out and dragged my Chanel bag down stairs, luckily it escaped unharmed. Why it was in there in the first place I will never know. I take all the blame…

A Handmade Bedside Shelf
Things had to change and I had an idea. Marc rolls his eyes when I say that, he knows I have a project in mind and some hard work will follow…
Like all the best ideas this project was inspired by something I saw in a stylish London hotel we stayed at recently. So I asked my very talented other half (aka Marc) if he could make me something similar and adapt it to suit my ideas.
I requested: a small bedside shelf, the idea being that I would only have room for the necessities and therefore it might be possible to keep it tidy and uncluttered.
My bedside shelf should have room for my:
- Glass of water
- HB pencil and my ‘3am notebook’
- My Cactus
- My favourite family photo.
- Space for my morning cuppa
& be made from:
- Old wood
- Items we already had
Marc produced his trusty tape measure, muttered some numbers under his breath, asked me a few more questions and disappeared for a few hours.
A few hours Later…
He came back with this:
The unwanted wood was rescued from a farm bonfire, and the brackets we used to use in garden. They have now been ‘plated’ in a matte gold colour, so no nasty rusty bits to worry about.

My glass has a hole to fit in, no more spilled drinks. Even my pencil has its own groove on the bedside shelf. The whole thing is beautifully made as usual with rounded corners so I dont knock myself on it (gosh i sound like a toddler!)

So what’s on your bedside table? I remember an instagram game that went around a few years ago, you had to photo your bedside table, anyone else remember that. I snapped mine with a couple of gin bottles on just for fun!
