Frome for Saturday Supper and a Mooch.

Frome is a lovely market town in Somerset. We live very near to Frome as we are in Dorset, in the South West of England. Our beautiful, rural county is very well situated, bordered by Hampshire to the East, Wiltshire to the North East, Somerset to the North West and Devon to the West.

The sea is a mere half an hour’s drive away, so whichever way we point the car in, we know we will end up somewhere scenic with a history.

History of Frome

Frome is situated on the on the eastern edge of the Mendip Hills, built on the steep hills around the river. The name ‘Frome’ means ‘brisk-flowing water’ and the early town and its Market Place grew up around the springs. To this day the springs provide continuous supplies of fresh clean water, as it has done throughout the town’s history.

The town dates from around the 7th century when the Abbot of Malmesbury, St Aldhelm, founded a monastery here.

Frome has one of the largest collections of Listed buildings in Somerset.

Catherine’s Hill

Frome has one of the largest collections of Listed buildings in Somerset. My favourite place to shop is Catharines Hill, there are plenty of unique, quirky shops selling everything from handmade wares, to vintage clothing and paraphernalia.

Traditionally referred to as Frome’s Artisan Quarter, St Catherine’s consists of Catherine Hill, Palmer Street, Paul Street, Stony Street and the lower part of Catherine Street. This is one of the historic areas of Frome, composed of cobbled streets which used to be the main road into Frome.

On the first Sunday of each month you can shop at ‘The Frome Independent Market’  The Independent Market is a mini festival that takes over the whole town attracting many of visitors. It brings together artists and designers, produce, plants, flowers, retro, vintage, collectables, home wares and street entertainment. A must visit if you plan the dates correctly!

My new favourite place to eat…

Last weekend, we decided to down tools and head off for an early evening supper at Sam’s Kitchen Deli, my new Favourite place to eat in Frome. They have a branch in Bath too, I’m putting that one on my list for our next visit to Bath! I also wanted to show the other half some of the new shops and drop a few christmas hints!

What I Wore:

The boots are comfy, the coat is perfect for milder weather and the jumper goes with everything. The trousers are from Lindex a swedish company, (although they look creased in these pics from sitting down, they soon dropped out!)
