Fat Quarter Home 25 Fabric Projects A Book Review

Fat Quarter home is the second fabulous book by Amanda Russell and Juliet Bawden, that I have recently reviewed.

The first one ‘Fat Quarter Quick makes’ you can read about here I even made a pretty project from it, a very handy one it is too!

What is a fat quarter?

A FAT QUARTER, or FQ as it is often abbreviated, is a term used in patchwork and sewing. It is a way of cutting a yard of traditional quilting cotton fabric in 4. If you cut a quarter of a yard from a length of material you will get a strip 9 inches by 44 or 45 inches

About the book

…”There are 25 quick and easy projects fat quarters or fabric scraps. Each project has easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions and beautiful accompanying photography, as well as a handy tools and techniques section. This book is ideal for using up leftover remnants of fabric to create a range of decorative and useful items for your home. The projects also make great gifts for friends and family. Projects include: pot holder, tea cosy, storage bucket, lavender bag, apron, drop-in seat, padded coat hanger, doorstop, drinks coaster, lingerie bag and a peg bag…”

Is it good for beginners?

I agree the projects are quick and easy, but some are more suitable for beginners than others. If you are a beginner I suggest you start with the padded hangers and work your way up to the wash bag?

There are projects suitable for beginners and some for more experienced crafters. All projects are clearly explained with easy to follow instructions and illustrations.

All patterns are included at the end of the book and will just need to be copied, enlarged and printed.

My favourite things about Fat Quarter Home…

I love the photos and the fabric choices, both are fresh and modern, giving a cool contemporary edge to the book. The fabric prints have been mixed and matched very cleverly. I also admire the modern twist that Juliet and Amanda have given to some of the more traditional makes.

For instance the Lavender bag has been updated with a rivet! As I am not a fan of ditsy floral, this is one project I do intend to make in the near future.

In a nutshell, I have been inspired and personally that is all I ask of a craft book. This one certainly delivered.
