Marvelous Metallics 5 Over 50 June Outfit Challenge

Marvelous metallics is the brilliant theme dreamt up by Anna from Annas Island style blog for this month’s 5 over 50 June outfit challenge

What is 5 Over 50?

‘5 over 50’ is the brainchild of Gail from is this mutton blog A monthly outfit challenge for five of us  ‘gals’ who are all over fifty years old. Each month, one of us takes it in turn to set a different theme, you can see last months here

It is hard to believe a whole month has gone by since then!

Marvelous Metallics.

Metallics have been having a moment, they are everywhere, think sequins for the day on clothes, plus rose gold highlights for makeup and even hair. In interiors too, brass and copper are here to stay for 2017. You tell me who doesn’t enjoy a glimpse of a shiny, reflective surface every now and then?

What I wore for the Marvelous Metallics June challenge:

A favourite style of mine for daywear is to mix shiny, pretty, sparkly things, with the rough and readiness of frayed denim. Double denim or double metallics? the choice is yours if you dare…

Looking at these photos, I think I may have been channeling my inner Disney Princess!

Shoes: I opted for shiny holographic flat pointed ankle strap pumps (last years buy) from ‘And other stories’ my favourite store. The shoes have a snakeskin effect and look almost lilac in the sunshine, I love them!

Skirt: My metallic skirt is by Joanna Hope, courtesy of  J d Williams. A bright shiny gold, sun ray pleats, fully lined with an elasticated waist, the quality is outstanding.

Top: Denim :bodice: style top, puffed sleeves, lace up feature at side with a side zip fastening, gathered under the bust. Frayed hem detailing from Zara

Bag: A digital print, satin mini box bag, with silver chain handle. (Early spring was in the Sale)  From M & S

The dilemma; so do you mix it up and wear silver with gold? Or do you stay true to one or the other?

If you are a regular reader you will know how I love to mix it up!

Laurie from ‘Vanity and Me’ calls me ‘wacky’ I prefer ‘boho chic’ !?

I love how each of us in the 5 Over 50 group has a different style. Laurie is always classic and elegant, and I’m definitely a Boho girl, it’s hard to describe your own style isn’t it? A bit like choosing which spice girl you were most like, back in the 90’s. So which one were you? I used to have a classic Bob back then, wore high heels and short dresses, therefore I was always ‘posh’ !?

My personal favourite is when shiny, pretty, sparkly things are contrasted with the rough and readiness of frayed denim for daywear. Double denim or double metallics the choice is yours if you dare?

In the pic above did you spot the pigeon flying past behind me…?

Stunning outfits – you all look beautiful! x

Honestly, my first thought was that you’d gone for the subtle route with the gilded shoes. Upon taking a closer look, I realised that your skirt was full-tilt metallic, Ashley. What a wonderful exercise in tricking the eye, creating an almost neutral (for lack of a better expression) vibe for that dreamy concoction. Very lovely.

      Hello Sheila,
What a lovely compliment thank you!
Yes I do admire subtlety but I also like the ‘in-your-face’ approach too.
So pleased you like my idea and lovely to ‘meet’ you too
      best wishes

Ashley, our skirts are so similar and yet we’ve styled them quite differently which is the whole point I suppose. Your pairing of gold and denim is quite a novel idea to me, very inspirational! Your shoes are so pretty and do seem to change colour in the different light and situations. I love to see everyone’s take on this theme. I can’t believe that we’re already two months on with this – I can’t wait to see what we’re up to next time!

Ashley—I just found you from Laurie’s & Gail’s blog!! How fabulous to meet you!
This skirt is such a dream!! I keep wanting to buy one, but I’m trying to use some restraint—how many clothes does one person need, my husband always says…ha ha!

    • 05/06/2017 / 22:24

I really really love metallic – I am always drawn to metallic clothing but am nearly always steered away by my daughter and husband because they don’t approve! And I let them do it – the lovely pleated skirt is just the thing I’ve been hankering after for months and months and haven’t got one because I think ‘mmmm, but so and so wont like it and when would I wear it?’ See, I’ve fallen at the first hurdle…..I would probably mix metallic but again, my daughters tell me that I shouldn’t!
