Patio Pimp

patio pimp summer 2017

For this fun, UK home blog hop post, I decided to overhaul and tidy our patio and call it a patio Pimp! I chose to do it in a quirky style and put away our usual garden furniture. You can see what it normally looks like in this summer garden post from last week.

As a family love colour and enjoy rescuing  and restoring old furniture. If you are a regular reader of my blog, you will already know the story of our well-loved Ercol couch.

… the story of our well-loved Ercol Couch and Chair.

original restored ercol day bed studio couch

Our Ercol studio couch/day bed is a prepatent one i.e. from approx. 1951. We found it in an old Barn under a pile of rubbish and the owner parted with it for very little money due to the poor state it was in. The pale beech wood was stained black from water damage and the arms were cracked. Luckily my other half is a skilled restorer and he set about sanding, sealing and filling, he gave it lots of TLC, but unfortunately, it needed painting to cover up the water damage. So out came his professional spray guns and he gave it a mirror smooth coat of lacquer paint.

I then sourced and bought some vintage upholstery fabric that came from France and reupholstered and piped some cushions that fitted. We ordered some bespoke seating foam and I made a cover for that too, until finally a few years ago our Ercol couch became part of the family. Later we were given an Ercol chair and matching foot stool, this only needed clean covers. I sewed them myself from some Laura Ashley fabric.

One day I would like to have them professionally covered in the same fabric and keep them in the same room. Today they are proudly taking part in the patio pimp.

sweet pea and willow embroidered cushions

Those brightly coloured, embroidered cushions on the Ercol chair, are from Sweet Pea and Willow. Aren’t they fabulous? and I think they sit nicely with the neutrality of the grey fabric. Gotta love a rainbow pom-pom trim!

Garden Storage Box:

My Patio Pimp for summer 2017 #UKHomeBlogHop

The most useful thing in our garden right now is that big plastic storage box. It may not be as pretty as the Ercol couch, but oh boy, it is so useful to store all the garden paraphernalia in, including all the cushions! It can also be used as a bench or a table. It came from Wayfair and I cannot recommend it highly enough. It even has a slow closing lid. Very useful if you have children, as there will be no trapped hands or fingers.

Yes I made those blankets….gotta love a crochet blanket for a candle lit chilled, summer evening !

Original Anglepoise lamps:

Both the Angelpoise lamps you can see here, the royal blue and the racing green, have been restored from rusty, neglected old lamps, to their original retro beauty by my other half. He takes them apart, sand blasts the bits, primes, fills and finally paints and rewires them.

Vintage Standard lamp and Shade:

The standard lamp was a £3.00 boot fair bargain in 2015. We restored and painted it in the same way. For my part I stripped off the fabric from the tatty old lamp shade and crocheted around the frame with some chunky tshirt yarn and a very large crochet hook! You can read more about the process here.

Coffee Table.

The coffee table was bought from Habitat in Brighton, in the mid 90’s. It has received some knocks and nibbles over the years, I used to have a large house bunny who liked to chew on the zigzag edges! Eight years ago it was revived with a thorough sanding down and sprayed to a high gloss, mirrored finish. We chose a neutral gold colour…

Bits and Pieces:

Green picture frame sprayed by you know who!

We use a piece of Astroturf as a fun garden rug, very soft underfoot and it stays in the garden all the time as it has drainage holes.

Small side table made by him too! All from scaffold bars and a scrap of wood. (I know how clever is he and how lucky am I?)

The stones and fossils on the tray on the coffee table were all collected on trips to our local beaches.

Old logs and branches make useful and decorative objects.

So there you have it! Of course, we don’t normally have this furniture in the garden, but if you are pimping your patio, it should be a little bit farfetched, right?

Tomorrow at 11am, the next part of the tour will begin with my clever friend Sue, From Old fashioned Susie Blog.

You’ve done a great job on the couch, I wouldn’t have guessed it had been restored. I really need one of those boxes, I never have anywhere to store my cushions and outdoor bits and bobs.

    • 31st May 2017 / 23:10

      Thanks Stephanie!
The storage box has been a lifesaver so far, highly recommend it!

Your outdoor space is so much fun, so fab and light-hearted! I love the way you’ve used indoor items outdoors instead of relying on obvious “outdoor furniture”, it really gives the space masses of character. xo

This is so you!! Love all the colours and vintage bits, that trunk looks really handy. I could do with something similar

    • 30th May 2017 / 20:44

Thanks Sue! That trunk may not be pretty, but it is the bees knees for garden storage and it is waterproof too!
      bestest as ever

  14. 30th May 2017 / 15:19

Wow. It is literally a whole room outdoors! Even if it’s not like that all the time, I’m sure it’s great fun to entertain in your garden. By the way, I like the idea of the outdoor storage box for the cushions. Is it completely water tight?

    • 30th May 2017 / 20:46

      Hello Juan!
Thank you for your comment, yes the storage trunk is waterproof (so far) and very handy for all the cushions and rugs that we need for the garden!
      best wishes

  15. 30th May 2017 / 14:33

Oh, I’ve always wanted an Ercol daybed – how lucky of you to find one and to restore it so beautifully! And those Anglepoise lamps – how lovely to have such a handy partner, eh? xx

    • 30th May 2017 / 20:48

      Hello Kate!

We were lucky to have found our Ercol, but I wish we did not have to paint it. At least we rescued it. The barn we found it in burnt down not long afterwards!

      best wishes

  16. 30th May 2017 / 14:06

I just knew I was going to love your post even before I clicked through. All the colours are just so happy-making. I love the blue and green and all of your handmade touches. The whole area looks amazing.

    • 30th May 2017 / 20:49

      Thank you Rachel!

Of course in real life the Ercol lives in the conservatory! I only styled it like this for the post (shhhhhh!)

      Best wishes

  17. 30th May 2017 / 13:11

Oh hello petty garden space! So colourful (therefore love it) but please please tell me you won’t be leaving the Ercol chairs in the rain (skipping through photos on lunch break, will read in detail on the train back home!!). Have the same garden storage box and swear by it for all garden cushions!

    • 30th May 2017 / 20:53

      Jenny Hello and thank you!

Please dont worry, the Ercol lives in the conservatory and the chair lives in the lounge.

In reality we have the boring plastic wicker sofa units that everyone has!
I styled it all up for the post and made my other half drag it in and out between rain drops!

Yes same here re the garden storage box, not pretty but very useful!

      Best wishes

      Hi Laurie
So pleased you like it, and yes Marc does a good job when he gets his big paint spray guns out! (he used to restore cars!)
      Ashley xx

  19. 30th May 2017 / 12:14

Ashley, this is such a perfect fun and colourful space. I love your commitment to vintage and what you’ve done with the Ercol sofa, if it hadn’t of been in such bad condition you may never have painted it but it looks so fabulous as it is now.

    • 30th May 2017 / 12:18

      Hi Ruthie,
thanks so much, yes it was a difficult decision to make, painting such an iconic piece of furniture, but then i decided we (he!) could change the colour if we fancied? so pleased you like it..
      best Ashley x

  20. 30th May 2017 / 11:59
