The Back Story featuring Flo and Dot.

Flo and Dot has been on my Back Story ‘Hit list’ for sometime now…

Flo and Dot is my guest for February’s Back story. Do you ever ‘stalk’ someone on instagram? Of course I mean that as in the best kind of ‘stalking’ for instance you check someones account most days, just to see what they’ve been making, how they are and what they have been doing lately.
I have to admit I do this with Sarah-Jane from ‘Flo and Dot’. I love her instagram account and although I may not always comment or like (definition of an insta stalker) I always ‘ooh and ahh’ quietly to myself over her work. I save her pictures,  (I love this new feature on IG, saves searching) and have had her crocheted light bulbs on my list to make since forever.

Flo and dot is colourful, fresh, unique and oh so cute, as I am sure you will agree?

This month, I finally organised myself and invited Sarah-jane to feature on The Back story. I was delighted when she agreed to answer my 5 questions…

1.Why the name Flo and Dot?

The name Flo and Dot comes from my grandmothers, Florence and Dorothy. Both were born in Norfolk like me. A generation of makers, they could always be found with needles or hook in hand, knitting, crocheting or sewing.

2. How did you learn to crochet?

I was taught to crochet at a young age by my mum and her mum. I have always dabbled in crafts, but a few years ago I became hooked on crochet once more and haven’t looked back since.

3. Who or what inspires you?

Anything and everything, I’m inspired by my surroundings, by nature, by modern life. I love vintage patterns, from delicate doilies to quirky homewares and retro clothing. At the moment, I have a bit of a thing for cacti!

4. How do you juggle life and creativity?

I work fulltime in finance so it can involve a lot of juggling. I crochet to relieve stress, a little bit of me time at the end of a busy day, a chance to be creative. It’s sometimes soothing to work on a long-term project like a blanket or if I want a quick fun project then it’s amigurumi.

5. What are your plans for ‘flo and dot’ in 2017?

I have a few new designs coming up, some exciting collaborations and I also hope to spend much more of my time making items and writing up patterns for my Etsy shop.

A huge thank you to Sarah-Jane for taking time out to provide her answers and those lovely pics

I would love to know if you have any suggestions for future Back Story interviews? It doesn’t have to be crochet! So let me know in the comments if there is any one you particularly admire and want to know more about, and I will do my best to publish it for you!

Meanwhile here are some older Back Stories you may be interesting in reading?
bestest wishes
