Crochet knitwear from candy floss, technically impossible, probably?
However with a little imagination, I have found the perfect yarn for you to crochet a sweater from, that appears to be made from candy floss, intrigued? then read on…
My answer for you is this heavenly and oh so soft, mohair yarn from one of my favourite yarn company’s Wool and the Gang.
Β Β ‘Take Care Mohair’
Watg. describe it as “…Β a luxurious lightweight yarn. It is breathable, so warm in winter & cool in summer! Sustainably Produced. Biodegradable.Β Fluffy, warm & light, with a soft halo.Β Take Care Mohair comes from a 200 year old tradition of goat farming and mohair production in South Africa, passed down through generations of families in the area.Β ”
Wool and the gang generously asked me if I would like to review the yarn for myself and perhaps make something from it. I repliedΒ ‘yes please!’Β and welcomed the chanceΒ to make a crochet garment from it. I wanted to actuallyΒ wearΒ this beautiful yarn and not just wrap it around my neck or pop it on my head.
The Crochet Knitwear Details:
The Pattern:Β
I chose theΒ ‘Dot cotton sweater’Β pattern available from wool and the gangs website..
The Yarn: Take care Mohair.
3 x 50g balls of Dusty grey
5 x 50g x balls of Bubble Gum pink.
The Hook:
I used a 5.5 mm size crochet hook
The Review:
Oh boy this yarn is fluffy, the best thing about it is the chunky weight. It it hooks up fast and it doesnt rip apart, its strong. IΒ suggestΒ you keep the stitches simple, as any complicated pattern will be lost under all the fluff.
Use a large hook too, anΒ 8 mmΒ isΒ recommended. I wish I had used a 6.,5mm.
I altered the pattern slightly to make the sleeves longer, and I crocheted the seams together on the right side, instead of whip stitching them together on the wrong side. Why? because I liked the effect. Be warned the fluff gets everywhere! (even up your nose) So dont wear a black outfit to crochet in. I was covered in it and so was the sofa. However it is easily removed with a damp cloth.
Like most mohair yarn it is not easy to undo, so if you make a mistake give it a little tug, in this way I did manage to ‘frog’ a few rows. The fluff is very forgiving and covers any mistakes, so you probably wont need to undo it anyway.
I am more than pleased with the result, this jumper is so warm. I won’t need a new coatΒ after allΒ this winter.
