Our Home: the sitting room
We call this room our sitting room because it is literally a room to ‘sit in’ and relax. There is no tech, and no screens in there. We just listen to music, read, draw and design or simply daydream in peace.
The Sitting Room aka the ‘Library’ !
Our sitting room also has a lovely view of the garden, the dog loves to sit in here with us, he stares out of the window and watches the birds!
The other room, the big room is a family room, we call that one our lounge. Different names for different rooms, do you do that?
This sitting room is a room full of Marc’s restorations. That man is a genius and together I think we make an imaginative team. Necessity really is the mother of invention, we do not have money to spend on new furniture so where we are able we re use and rescue!
Pigeon Holes, the Vintage Shelves
I may have mentioned before that the book shelves are very old office pigeon holes ,rescued from an old warehouse and, destined for the tip! Marc painstakingly repaired, painted and installed them. I happily filled them: we even put back the original brass label frames, At night some of the shelves are lit up from within (Marc being clever again) Its a lovely piece of furniture,
Ercol Studio couch
The Ercol studio couch, was also a warehouse find, we bought this and some other bits and bobs for the total price of £30 a few years ago! The couch is an early one it is pre patent. Unfortunately it was heavily water damaged and the arms had split, even after a lot of tlc it did not look its best, so we reluctantly decided to paint it. Marc filled, primed, sanded and filled again, before getting out his professional spray guns, The mirror smoth, lacquered finish is a joy to behold. I figured I can change the colour anytime so win, win in the end. We managed to find and buy some vintage french upholstery fabric and made some covers. At the moment i am in the process of making some denim ones too…
The soon to be removed wallpaper:
The wallpaper (Cole and sons ‘Woods) is over 8 years old and is being removed any moment now. I have grown tired of wallpapered feature walls. We have new plans for this wall, involving plants and oil paintings. This is one of the reasons I wanted to write this post to enable me to take some before pictures!
Accessories etc.
Marc also cleaned, rewired, restored and partially rebuilt the old shop fitting unit too. He made the date numbers on the wall. He also restored and painted every Anglepoise lamp in the house. You may have noticed there are a couple in this room? The coffee table was a boot fair find for £5, we stuck a new surface on it. The pictures are all vintage, and framed by Marc.
Cushions:
The cushions are dear to me, they were made by sue and her sister who together are ‘Made by Swimmer’ I wrote about them here
I of course contributed crochet and imagination!
I love peeping into other peoples houses don’t you? I’d love to know what you think of our handmade sitting room? Happy to answer any questions too!
bestest wishes
