Sewing Vintage Simplicity 3451 a 1950s Topper

Simplicity 3451

Let me guess, you are either thinking what is a topper? or else just what is she wearing now? In answer to both questions, I am wearing a freshly sewn vintage style topper a vintage pattern, Simplicity 3451
During the 50s/60s a Topper was a light weight jacket that could be worn over a blouse, skirt or capri pants, a bit like we wear a cardi today, but smarter. I think its a lovely word for a very useful garment. It is unstructured and simple. A topper can be sewn with shoulder pads and buttoned up, or loose and swinging. It comes in various lengths.

Sewing vintage is fascinating

This pattern came from my suitcase of 137 vintage patterns. Marc bought them all for my birthday in October. This is the first one I have sewn so far. I have so many plans, there are some real beauties in that case.
This was a very simple pattern, for my version I only used 2 main pieces for each outer and inner layer.

Simplicity 3451 is reversible.

So I chose to use polar fleece. A fabric that I feel is often overlooked by us sewistas.

It is not just for kids blankets you know? At work I am constantly in and out of two very old, cold theatres. A coat is too bulky and a cardi not always warm enough.

I have found the Simplicity 3451 ‘Topper’ to be the perfect garment…casual, comfy and warm plus its a bit of fun!I sewed it on my overlocker and finished all the hems by hand. planning a longer one next time in tweed I think?

What do you think,  which way do you like it, black or leopard?
