I worked in Selfridges Department Store for two years. Major changes were taking place in the store at that point in its history. It was the Nineties, remember them?
Every back corridor, stockroom and staircase was a remnant of times gone by. Whilst as a complete contrast, the shop floor was a marvel of futuristic design!
Much later I found this old book in a Lewes book shop. It was published in 1957. Its fascinating and due to the tv programme I recently dug it out.
I grew up in Hampshire and when I was young we used to visit Highcliffe beach, there was a ruined house there called “Highcliffe Castle” From the book I discovered it was Selfridge’s country home!
Now fully restored and a visitor attraction. I find it strange, that Selfridges part in its history is not mentioned on the website?
So for anyone else who is a fan of the programme, here are some pictures from the book of the real Mr Selfridge and his family.
The first picture above is Mr Selfridge from the book jacket, as he was when he built the store
He was 55 when he came to England, much older than he is portrayed in the first TV series.
Mr Selfridge on the left, inspecting the construction site….
His wife and children.
The store under construction in 1908.
I do hope you enjoyed that little glimpse….?
