I was ‘doodling’ around with my crochet hook on sunday…..
….mainly as a reward for hoovering all of the upstairs rooms
but also in response to ‘Simply Crochet’s‘ tweet about granny ‘sunday’ squares…
Read on if you crochet, if not skip to the etsy purchase bit?
I based my colour palette on this fabric:
I like to do this, because I’m lazy!?
Then still doodling with my hook I discovered this stitch combination pattern:
Now I’m sure its been done before and I’m sure it probably has a name?
Its pretty because as the piece works up its like a stained glass window effect….you see the colours through other colours. The work is quite sturdy too, nice for a cushion perhaps….
This is how I did it
You see….. an easy matching colour palette
Basic two stitch combo:
Treble and double crochet.
So lets begin……
Its very simple and for this basic tutorial I am assuming you know how to treble and double crochet?
I started with a two row classic granny square as you can see above…. first in navy and then in beige:
Next a white row of double crochet…
So its a basic row of ‘granny’ trebles followed by a row of double crochet .
here it is in more detail….are you with me?
It goes like this…..
I crocheted the trebles into the spaces as usual, but over the row of dc’s
For the corners in the treble rows I used a two chain space as above,
ie: 3tr 2ch 3tr
All the way around as normal …
(I dont use a chain spaces between the row of trebles)
Its up to you? but I prefer a slightly denser square.
Next a simple row of double crochet through the chain space as above:
For the corners on the dc row I use ‘dc ch dc’
Again all the way around, then
Next row is the treble row again…..
Stop when you like and join squares together or continue round….
What do you think?
Did I miss anything?
Happy to answer any questions in comments…..
Now the Etsy Purchase for any of you not interested in crochet!!
Isn’t is so so cute?
The flamingo is a ring….I love flamingos almost as much as swans!
The other piece is a brooch about 1″ square
I love it!
